Reflections on Psalm 16:4
I was having my morning devotion and performing my morning ritual, which is reading the Bible before starting my day.
It is a culture for me that when words cease, I pray with the Psalms. It doesn’t have to be a specific one; I just go with the flow. Upon opening my Bible, Psalm 16:4 ministered to me differently, and these are my thoughts from that verse:
"Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god;"
This sounds like a straightforward statement, and it definitely is. The devil doesn't have much he wants to give. He doesn't take away problems; instead, he uses the "law of exchange" and recycles them. This means he takes from someone else to give to you, or he takes what you already have and hands it back to you. And when he recycles, he repackages the problems by adding new ones to them.
Those who follow Satan know they have no peace, and most of them wish they had never followed him.
"Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer;"
David made a profound statement here. He said those who hasten after another god are people who shed blood; their gods drink the blood of men, and they themselves become bloodthirsty. This shows how the devil turns humans into carnivorous animals—the heavy price paid for following another god.
If those who hasten after another god were wise, they would ask: Why would I need someone else's blood to prosper if the entity I have gone to meet truly has enough? It simply emphasizes what I said earlier: he doesn't have much to offer, so he relies on the law of exchange.
"Nor take up their names on my lips;"
This is another heavy truth. Some people are aware that the wealth others flaunt in society is questionable. It is often clear that the wealth and status they have achieved are products of bloodshed or oppression.
David suggests that speaking highly of such people is a sin and that their names should not be given importance or even mentioned.
Wealth and status can be deceptive and can often cloud our judgment. However, the God of heaven does not hide the truth from His people. God shows us these things so we understand that we should not desire what these people have, nor should we make their lifestyle our goal. Do not mention their names or give them importance, because what they possess is a product of bloodshed.
I hope this blessed you, and I think doing a series on this chapter will be a good idea. Thank you very much.
